Medical Technologies Collaborative
As part of the Yale UCL Collaborative, the UCL Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) and the Yale Department of Biomedical Engineering have received a £150,000 grant from the UK’s Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to help create a Yale UCL Innovation Pipeline in medical technologies. The ESPRC Global Engagements Fund is used to fund workshops and the exchange of graduate students in each of three thematic areas:
- Imaging and sensing
- Biomaterials and drug delivery
- Vascular engineering
The Innovation Pipeline is directed at early-stage (pre-commercial) innovation generation and management. The objective of the program is to stimulate and encourage academic-led and academic-inspired innovation that is focused on patient benefit and delivery, while at the same time recognizing that market awareness and validation is vital if real-world impact and implementation is to be achieved.
The program provides practical support to the chosen projects, (1) by funding bilateral academic staff and graduate student research exchanges, and (2) by funding market validation studies to support the innovation process. The graduate students are chosen from the flagship project collaborators’ laboratories, and will typically spend up to three months in the partners’ laboratory.
